How to Get the Most from Your Genealogy Search on Our Site. Our genealogy search engine uses Optical Character Recognition technology, so the images in records are searched for keyword matches. Records don't always include full first names. Your ancestor could be listed under an initial or salutation. Also try searching the genealogy archive for last name variations. Include multiple newspapers in your genealogy search.
Newspapers often published news stories and obituaries in old hometowns and in locations where other family members lived.

Vivendi is to be commended for keeping the website up for 2.5 years after selling the software line. They had contemplated closing it early in 2002 and then again in April 2003 Vivendi International, parent company of Sierra, sold the Generations software line to A&E, parent company of Genealogy.com in the late spring of 2002. Broderbund produced and distributed the software for Genealogy.com, but did not make any great emphasis on it at their website. Broderbund is selling two Generations software packages, Generations Family Tree package and the Generations Family Tree Plus and I have also seen these bundled into 'Value Packs' by Broderbund. Genealogy.com has recently been acquired by MyFamilyTree.com, and the software lines continue to be available. There are no plans for any further development of the software beyond v8.5a and it's printing patch according to the latest information from Genealogy.com. The best location these days for finding copies of Generations appears to be eBay (If you wish to find the latest version be sure to look for images of the box/package and make sure that you see 'Broderbund' on it.
Mike Hobart has a few copies of the Sierra Generations releases which he received as partial compensation for moderating the Generations message board. Please contact him if you are looking for a copy. These are complete packages. Windows 7 and Windows 8 compatibility Mike Hobart has moved his genealogical work over to the parent (so to speak) of Generations, the LeisterPro Reunion software on the Macintosh. He does keep copies of Generations on Windows XP running in a virtual machine on the Mac. This is largely to assist people with problems and data transfer. He has tested Generations under both Windows 7 and Windows 8 and the programs work.
The database programs suffer limitations as noted in the Tips due to the Windows NT heritage of Windows XP and later. PRODUCTS AND SOFTWARE VERSIONS The various combinations released to this point are as shown in the following list none of the Sierra U.S. Releases are in production.
We have now (2011) sold our last copy of Generations as the publishers of this software have decided that they no longer want this to be available for sale. The good news is, existing owners of the program may continue using Generations even on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Click below for instructions. If you were planning to use Generations for the first time I would definitely recommend that you look at rather than starting with such an old program as Generations Generations has been a brilliant piece of software for genealogists and in all probability may have been the best program available for a number of years. Other programs in the past have never quite been able to match it, in all of its functions. However the program has become increasing more difficult to support and has suffered interference from many other programs over the last five years. In addition to this the authors of a much newer program 'Family Historian have made a great effort to build into their program many of the best features from Generations and in our opinion have now come up with a product that is much better than Generations. We are confident in recommending as a replacement for Generations and it has received several awards for being the best software available for Family History and professional genealogists. Please take a look.
It handles images in a much better way than any other family tree program and almost has the complete functionality of your old program. The later versions look very much like the Generations program including images on the family screen. If you are ready to add photographs to your Generations database then changing to Family Historian is highly recommended as it is able to handle images in an extremely clever way.
You may download a 30 day trial version of the new Family Historian and import a copy of the Gedcom file that Generations is able to produce from the file menu in your old program. If you have an old Generations file and you are not able to open it or produce a gedcom file then we can do this for you for you. Have a play with your own data in Family Historian and see what you think. Testing with the trial will give you the opportunity to check how your source data transfers over.
Best Answer: I have over 35 years of research and have used several programs. I started with Brothers Keeper back in the days before Windows. But I also have tried Master Genealogists, LDS, Family Tree Maker (FTM) 2005, and am currently attempting FTM 2009. I have also tried Legacy, Roots-magic and a couple others. Generations Grande Suite 8.0 is not supported by Serra.

If you type Genealogy Software into the search engine and got to the Wikipedia site there is a chart of comparison of software that includes information on features and cost. I have it downloaded so I can check on various features on the different programs. This would probably help you find a more current software that you can use. Most of the programs have the ability to download from other software so you will not have to retype everything, but having a copy of your work on a disc or external hard drive is a good idea as well. Roots Magic, Family Tree Maker and PAF will take all of your research, probably, if you export a GEDCOM from your current program. If your program has non-standard GEDCOM tags you may have data drop out. FTM used 'Cause of death' before anyone else did, for instance.
After you import 'Mydata.ged', look for 'Mydata.lis'. It will have all of the errors. If tags do drop out, you can add the data back in as a note.
I like RM the best of the three, but you can Google 'Genealogy Software Comparisons' to get professional reviewer's opinions. PAF is free, from the Mormons. Is ultra file opener safe. RM and FTM both have free 14 or 30 day trials, I believe. Hi I also lost my installation disc then I found this seller on ebay who was selling generations grande suite containing the installation disc.
